What Does Therapy for Postpartum Anxiety Look Like?
Therapy for postpartum anxiety is a space where you finally get to put down everything you've been carrying. It's not about being told what to do, being made to feel guilty for not “savoring every moment” this time, or even having someone analyze you- it's about having a place to actually talk about what's going on, understand why you feel the way you do, and start to feel better. Most moms leave their first session feeling relieved that someone finally gets it.
What Happens in the First Session?
The first session is really just a conversation with getting to know you better. There's no pressure to have everything figured out or know exactly what you need. We talk about what's been going on, what's feeling hard, and what you're hoping to get out of therapy. It's also a chance for you to get a feel for whether we're a good fit.
Will I Have to Talk About My Birth Experience?
Only if and when you're ready. If your birth didn't go as planned, that experience may be connected to some of what you're feeling now but there's no pressure to dive into it right away. We go at your pace. Nothing happens in therapy that you're not ready for. Many moms I work with who had upsetting and/or traumatic birth experiences find EMDR Therapy to be very helpful. If that is something you are interested in, we will explore more what that will look like.
What Approaches Are Used to Treat Postpartum Anxiety?
At Happy Moms Therapy, sessions draw on trauma-informed therapy (including EMDR), CBT, and body-based approaches. EMDR is especially effective for anxiety and birth trauma- it helps your brain process experiences that feel stuck so they stop running in the background of your life. CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) helps you create more awareness of how you are talking to yourself and start to replace unhelpful thoughts that often increase anxiety, with thoughts that are more helpful. Body-based approaches help you get out of your head and back into your body, which is often where anxiety lives.
How Long Does It Take to Start Feeling Better?
Every mom is different, but most people notice a shift within the first several sessions. You might start sleeping a little better, feel less reactive, or notice the constant dread beginning to quiet down. Therapy isn't a quick fix, but it's also not something you have to do forever- the goal is to give you tools you can actually use so that you don’t need therapy forever.
Do I Have to Come In Person?
No, whether you attend in-person or online is up to you. All sessions at Happy Moms Therapy are virtual, which means you can show up from your couch, your car, or wherever works for you. For a mom in the postpartum period, not having to pack up a baby and drive somewhere is a big deal. You just need a quiet space and a reliable internet connection. For therapy sessions with me, it is also completely okay if you need to tend to baby, feed baby, or even walk around wearing baby! Just know, I’ve been there and I totally get how hard it can be to actually access support when you’re in deep in postpartum.
Is Therapy Really Worth It?
Absolutely! And yes, I’m bias because I’m a therapist, but I’ve also seen amazing transformations. I have worked with so many moms that start seeing me in their darkest times to then be able start to find joy again and find their place in motherhood.
Postpartum anxiety doesn't tend to just go away on its own. The longer it goes untreated, the more it can affect your relationship with your baby, your partner, and yourself. Therapy gives you a real path forward- not just coping strategies, but actual healing. You deserve that.
If you're wondering whether therapy might help, that question alone is worth exploring. I offer a free 20-minute consultation so we can talk about what's going on and see if working together feels right.
